Eskom must accept accountability for its actions - Energy Regulator

Eskom has been asked to accept accountability for the problems facing it.

The power utility faced tough questions from a panel from the National Energy Regulator of South Africa during public hearings in Nelson Mandela Bay on Wednesday.

Eskom is asking Nersa for a 15% tariff increase per year for a three-year period.

Nersa chairperson, Nomfundo Maseti, said they want to see the power utility accept accountability and not transfer the negativity of their actions onto consumers.

Following gruelling questions from the panel, Eskom promised to revise its presentation to address issues raised at the hearing such as the impact that their request for an increase will have on consumers.

"Today it was different from the past two days because Eskom has come out forcefully, making certain admissions regarding the faults on their part and the mistakes that they have made," Maseti said.

Eskom CFO Calib Cassim said since the appointment of a new board issues such as corruption and mismanagement are being addressed but he said these cannot be fixed overnight.
