The Eastern Cape recorded one of the country's highest festive season road death tolls, according to statistics released on Wednesday by Transport Minister Blade Nzimande.
He said 238 people lost their lives in 195 accidents recorded in the province since 1 December.
KwaZulu Natal had the highest number of accidents at 267 with 328 deaths recorded.
Nzimande said Department officials recorded a total of 1 286 accidents country-wide over the period under review resulting in 1 612 fatalities.
The Eastern Cape, Northern Cape and Free State recorded the highest percentage increase in the number of fatalities.
"This resulted in an 80% increase in Northern Cape from 30 to 54 fatalities, Free State increased by 28% and the Eastern Cape recorded a 22% increase from 195 to 238 fatalities. Gauteng and and North West are the only province that recorded decreases," the Minister said.
