He said 238 people lost their lives in 195 accidents recorded in the province since 1 December.

KwaZulu Natal had the highest number of accidents at 267 with 328 deaths recorded.

Nzimande said Department officials recorded a total of 1 286 accidents country-wide over the period under review resulting in 1 612 fatalities.

The Eastern Cape, Northern Cape and Free State recorded the highest percentage increase in the number of fatalities.
