Power giant Eskom has announced a system emergency for Thursday evening.
Eskom spokesperson Andrew Etzinger says the power utility had to implement load shedding for two hours on Wednesday night and it seems likely that the same will be necessary on Thursday evening.
Etzinger says the cold weather being experienced across the country has seen a dramatic increase in demand for power.
He has appealed to everyone to use electricity sparingly, particularly between 5pm and 6pm.
Etzinger says if load shedding is necessary, it will be implemented nationally according to the schedules available on www.eskom.co.za.
