Escapee re-arrested in East London after 40 days of freedom

A trial awaiting prisoner who escaped from the East London Magistrates court last month has been re-arrested.

Spokesperson Captain Hazel Mqala says the suspect who was in custody for murder, attempted murder, business robbery, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, theft of motor vehicle and carjacking, escaped on the 5th of September.

She says on Friday police were busy performing tracing duties when they received information about the suspect.

Police followed up and spotted the escapee walking near Haven Hills cemetery in Amalinda.

Captain Mqala says when he saw police he fled into nearby bushes and disappeared.

His last trace was found next to the underground concrete water pipes.

Captain Mqala says the K9 unit was summoned to the scene but before they arrived the suspect surrendered to police.

He will appear in court on the additional escape charge on Monday.
