Equal Education to march to EC Education Dept

Members of education lobby group, Equal Education, will march to the Eastern Cape Department of Education in Zwelitsha Friday.

The group's provincial head, Lumkile Zani, says it is outrageous and negligent that 18 months after the Norms and Standards for School Infrastructure became law, there are still no plans publicly available.

Zani says they are demanding an immediate release of the plans.

"Equal Education, for the past five months have been visiting schools in King Williams Town and surrounds and the former Transkei region where we found learners learning under horrible conditions.  Others are learning in shacks and when it is hot it is difficult for learners to learn and also difficult for teachers to teach," he said.

He also said that the decision to march was taken jointly with school principals and "we were assured this will not set learners back in their academic work."

Zani says the march is to "demand the timeous implementation of Norms and Standards for School Infrastructure and the immediate release of all nine provincial implementation plans."

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the National Department of Basic Education Department spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga said the plans will only be released once the Council of Education Ministers have gone through the plans and approved their release.

"He said all this will be taking place next week on the 4 and 5 June.
