EPRU misses player payment deadline

The SA Rugby Players Association says all indications are that the EP Kings players have not been paid their outstanding salaries by the EP Rugby Union.

The deadline for payment of their October salaries expired at midnight last night.

Sarpa's Nyaniso Sam explained the player's options on the DMB on Algoa FM this morning...

"Players now have the legal right to cancel their contracts. If they have any other playing opportunity or full time job may pursue it. Players who wish to stay have no obligation to show up for any training" he said.

The cash-strapped EP Rugby Union has been battling for months now to pay its players and staff on time and an elusive sponsorship, said to be to the tune of R200 million, has so far failed to materialise.

The players have been on a mini-break after the Currie Cup, and are due to begin their Super Rugby pre-season training on Monday.

Meanwhile: Stuart Weir of the EP Kings Army supporters club has posted on the group's Facebook page that they've learnt that centre Tim Whitehead will be the first player to take a stand and that he will not be coming back to the Kings next week.

Whitehead, who captained the Kings for the bulk of the 2015 Currie Cup, was the player who came up with the white armband protest late in the season in support of his team mates who had not been paid their salaries.
