The trial against the owners of the Enyobeni Tavern will be back in the East London Magistrates Court on Wednesday and Thursday.
Vuyokazi and Siyakhangela Ndevu face charges of selling liquor to underage persons after 21 young patrons died in their Scenery Park tavern in June last year.
The couple broke their silence after their last court appearance in July, saying that all the witnesses who had testified against them were lying.
Several young people took the stand and testified that they had frequented the tavern, prior to the incident which saw hordes of patrons suffocating on an unknown substance, inside the tavern.
A former employee also confessed to abandoning her duties, when an overwhelming crowd of young people pushed the understaffed bouncers to gain entrance into the tavern.
Meanwhile Buffalo City Metro (BCM) said they conducted their own investigations and found that the double-storey tavern did not get the necessary approval from the Metro.
The Eastern Cape Liquor board said they had given a license for a previously erected structure and thus after the renovations, the couple had been trading alcohol illegally.
Meanwhile, the victims’ families expressed some relief, after police confirmed that the inquest, to determine the liability of the death of their children, will be starting from the 30th of August.
