Police in Despatch have opened an inquest docket after five members of a single family died when their home burned down on Tuesday night.
Spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart says the family lived in an informal home in a new area called Bayland, which is situated next to the R75, outside Despatch.
The cause of the fire, which broke out at about 8.30 pm, is not yet known and will be investigated.
A neighbour told police that a 34-year-old mother lived in the house with her four children.
The kids were three boys aged 3, 6 and 13 as well as an 11-month old baby girl.
The names have of the deceased have not yet been released.
