Employees end strike in Metro Waste Management sector

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality says the strike by employees in its waste management division has ended.

Employees downed tools a week ago at several municipal depots across the Metro over wages and other issues.

Municipality spokesperson, Roland Williams, says the week-long strike was resolved through the initiative of the executive director of public health, Dr Mamisa Chabula-Nxiweni.

Williams says she met with the striking workers on Tuesday and explained to them that their concerns can be addressed amicably. She was also quite assertive, however, in that no unlawful or illegal actions will be tolerated and that police will step in if it continues.

Williams added that all the areas in the Metro affected by the wanton dumping of refuse - much of it by striking workers - had been cleaned by the Municipality.
As per the normal weekly refuse-collection schedule, residents can start putting their garbage bags out for collection from Wednesday.
