The scourge of police killings once again came under the spotlight at the memorial service of Port Elizabeth flying squad member Dwane Kemp.
The NG Moedergemeente Church in North End was packed on Friday morning as former colleagues, community members and city officialdom gathered to honour 31-year-old Constable Kemp.
He died in hospital on Monday afternoon, just hours after being shot by an armed robber at the Le Bon Bakery in Central.
His colleague returned fire, killing four armed robbers inside the bakery. A 5th suspect fled and is being sought by police.
Thursday would have marked 8-years in the service of the flying squad for Constable Kemp.
Motherwell Cluster Commander, Major-General Dawie Rabie, said police killings are a tragic loss to communities.
