Emotions run high as Mossel Bay man appears in court on rape charge

Teachers and learners from the Imekhaya Primary School in Mossel Bay as well as employees from the Department of Social Development have taken part in a protest march to the Mossel Bay Magistrate Court where the alleged rapist of a 7 year old learner from the school appeared in court.

More than 100 people took part in the protest march on Wednesday morning after a 62-year old man allegedly raped a Grade one girl from the school almost two weeks ago.

The child was walking to school when the suspect allegedly confronted her and forced her to his home in KwaNonqaba. The victim managed to escape after the rape and the man was arrested shortly thereafter.

The suspect had to appear in court on Thursday for his bail application but his attorney was not present in court.

The case was postponed to 18 December and the man remains in custody.
