Eastern Cape police have re-arrested the last two suspects who were a part of seven awaiting trial prisoners who escaped from the Elliot police holding cells last week.
Spokesperson, Captain Khaya Tonjeni, says Dumisani Tom and Sfundo Sothondoshe were arrested in Elliot at about 5 am on Monday.
The pair, alongside five other prisoners, escaped last Wednesday.
Tonjeni says it is alleged that the seven escapees overpowered the police officers, robbed an official state firearm from the members and fled on foot. Shots were fired randomly as they fled from the cells.
the first suspect, aged 21, was effected within five hours of escape while another four were captured in and around Elliot between midnight and the early hours of Friday morning.
Tonjeni says the seven suspects will appear in the Elliot Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday to face the charges they were initially arrested for, whilst a charge of escaping from lawful custody will be added.
