Eleven days left to object to Port Elizabeth name change

Nelson Mandela Bay executive mayor Nqaba Bhanga says the multi-sectoral name change committee he set up to formally object to the geographical name changes in the Metro will meet again in seven days time.

He says the committee will prepare a response to Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa's initial correspondence that will not only be satisfactory to the committee but also to the communities of the Bay.

In his formal response, Minister Mthethwa asked Mayor Bhanga to indicate which specific geographical names changes he felt did not connect with the people living in Gqeberha - formally known as Port Elizabeth.

He also asked that he indicate which part of the government's public consultative process he wasn't happy with.

Mayor Bhanga told Algoa FM News that he would rally residents who are aggrieved by the name changes and the public participation process before the deadline for objections later this month.

There are now 11 days from Friday for those wishing to formally write an objection to the name changes to Minister Mthethwa.
