Elderly women assaulted at PE retirement village

Two elderly women were beaten and robbed at a retirement village in Buffelsfontein Road in Walmer, Port Elizabeth.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said a 76-year-old woman was woken up at around 04:15 on Sunday morning when the door to her flatlet was kicked open by an unknown person.

She said the woman was "smacked around and pushed to the floor" before the suspect took a TV and her cell phone and left.

Naidu said when she went next door for help she saw the suspect inside her neighbour's flat, having apparently gained entry through an unlocked door.

"The 77-year-old woman was hit over the head with an unknown object and the suspect took a DVD player and left. The woman was taken to hospital prior to the police's arrival," Naidu said.

She said they are urging residents living in complexes to improve their security saying desperate criminals will always find a way to get in.
