Detectives in the Garden Route have activated a 72-hour plan by mobilising specialised units and forensic experts who have been combing a murder scene at the luxury golf estate Pinnacle Point in Mossel Bay.
The body of 79-year-old Margaretha S Willemse was found on Saturday morning.
She was seated on a chair in her bedroom with a wound to her neck.
Police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie says her 87-year-old husband sustained multiple stab wounds but survived and raised the alarm.
He says the crime scene was covered in bloodstains.
Captain Pojie says the husband alerted the neighbour's caretaker on Saturday who accompanied him to their house in Albatros street.
The motive for the murder is unknown, but every possible scenario is being investigated, and a robbery cannot be ruled out.
The murder has shocked the community as Pinnacle Point is known for its excellent security.
Police are investigating a murder and attempted murder case and urged anyone with information to come forward.
Pojie says the husband is currently in hospital.
The Pinnacle Point Estate Homeowners Association says they are cooperating with the police and gave them all video footage to assist in their investigations.
The Estate has state-of-the-art security cameras and systems in place 24-hours a day and an internal investigation revealed no defects or system breakdowns.
At this point, no suspect has been identified.
