Port Elizabeth police are on the hunt for the suspects who attacked an elderly couple in their Schoenmakerskop home in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said that a 78-year-old man was allegedly shot in the face during home invasion and died of his injuries.
“A 78-year-old woman was “severely assaulted is in a critical condition in hospital,” Naidu said.
“At this stage it is also not known what has been taken from the house. Police are investigating a case of murder and robbery,” she said.
Naidu said in the last month the SAPS, Metro Police and Metro Traffic have dedicated patrols daily as well as increased visibility in the areas of Victoria Drive and Schoenmakerskop.
She said that the trio task teams in the Mount Road Cluster have also made significant arrests for the month of September on business and house robberies.
“A total of 14 arrests were effected for house and business robberies and on 13 September 2017 two accused were each sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for a house robbery which they committed in August 2016 in the Humewood area,” she said.
Police are appealing to anyone who can assist them in the investigation in tracing the suspect/s to contact Walmer police.
