An elderly man shot and injured two suspects who invaded his home in Richmond Hill in Gqeberha on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for police Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says the 73-year-old man, who lives in Lutman Street, was sleeping when a noise woke him up at about 8:40 pm.

The man grabbed his firearm to investigate when he noticed three suspects inside the passage approaching him.

Captain Janse van Rensburg says the complainant fired two shots in their direction, wounding two.

She says a third suspect managed to flee the scene.

A private security company and Metro police quickly responded to the scene to assist in the apprehension of the two wounded men, aged 31 and 37.

Captain Janse van Rensburg says the men gained entrance to the property by removing a window in the front bedroom.

The suspects are currently under police guard in the hospital, while the complainant sustained no injuries.

A case of housebreaking and attempted murder is under investigation.
