Gqeberha police are searching for a suspect after an elderly woman was shot and wounded in her home in Fernglen during the early hours of Saturday morning.
Spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says it is alleged that the 73-year-old woke up after hearing noises in the kitchen, and when she went to investigate, she noticed an unknown man who had forced open the back door.
She says he was unable to gain access due to a security gate on the inside.
The man threatened her and instructed her to open the gate, after which he fired a shot, wounding her in the leg.
She managed to activate the panic button and the suspect fled the scene.
The woman was taken to hospital for treatment.
Cases of attempted house robbery and attempted murder are under investigation.
