The Chairperson of Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Social Development, Nonkosi Mvana, has highlighted issues contained in the Children's Amendment Bill and its importance to the people of Buffalo City during public hearings.
Speaking in East London's Orient Theatre on Friday, she said these issues included parental responsibilities, child marriages, unaccompanied migrant children, Early Childhood Development, foster care, adoption services, and the role of municipalities.
Mvana said participants complained about the lack of assistance from the municipality and ward councillors towards Early Childhood Development Centres and highlighted a list of needs that the municipality failed to meet, including water and sanitation and infrastructure such as shelter.
She said they also told the Committee that the Bill is silent regarding the needs of children with disabilities.
The participants called for workshops on legislation on children.
The Committee will hold public hearings on the Bill in Nelson Mandela Bay on Saturday.
