Elderly former workers hold peaceful EL protest

Over 300 disgruntled former Transnet workers have embarked on a peaceful protest at the parastatal's Cambridge district office in East London.

They are demanding to reimbursement of their pensions and other benefits promised to them.

According to their representative Mike Matshaya, they were unfairly dismissed following a national railway workers' strike in 1988.

He says in other provinces workers were reinstated and carried over their benefits, including long service, UIF and pension funds, but in the Eastern Cape that never happened.

Transnet Media liaison office Viwe Tlaleane says they will respond after gathering all the facts of the case.
