Police in East London are searching for a 27-year-old man who allegedly killed an elderly woman in her home in Berea.

The 82-year-old Flo Schwartz was found in the garage of her home in Darlington Street, Berea with a wound to her head.

Police Spokesperson Brigadier Thembinkosi Kinana says it is alleged her gardener came to the house asking for tools he had left there the previous day when she opened the gate for him.

The deceased's 89-year-old husband, who is confined to a wheelchair due to ill health, became concerned when his wife took too long to return and pressed the panic button.

Kinana says security officers arrived and found her body on the scene.

Kinana did not confirm reports that a possible murder weapon was found at the scene, nor did he confirm reports from family members that the suspect had entered the house to steal money from the victim's purse.

He says the circumstances surrounding the incident forms part of the investigation.

No arrests have been made.

The suspect, whose identity is known to Algoa FM News, ran away and is still on the run.

This is the second woman to be killed in East London in the last 48 hours.

The body of a 23-year-old student from Quigney was found dismembered and stashed inside a suitcase on Thursday.

The gruesome discovery was made when a police patrol was alerted by a motorist to the suitcase and a black bag, which were found on the corners of Fleet Street and Fitzpatrick Road.
