An East London doctor has been arrested for a second time for allegedly issuing fraudulent sick certificates to members of the public.
Captain Anelisa Ngcakani of the Hawks says the 69-year-old Dr Siphokazi Sokupa, was arrested on Wednesday by the SAPS Anti-Corruption Unit.
She appeared in court in East London earlier on Thursday where she was granted bail of R5 000.
The matter was postponed to the 29th of May for further investigation.
Captain Ngcakani told Algoa FM News that Dr Sokupa’s latest arrest is an entirely separate matter to one being investigated by the Hawks, although the charges are of a similar nature.
In May of 2018, Dr Sokupa and her 37-year-old assistant, Cwaita Mngqibisa, appeared in the East London Magistrate’s Court on charges of allegedly issuing fraudulent sick notes to the public.
They were arrested in a sting operation after receiving several complaints from a Government department who claimed they kept getting sick notes from the same doctor.
Captain Ngcakani said an undercover policeman was roped in and received a sick note from the Doctor without being examined.
She says for that matter they were released on warning and are due back in court on the 15th of April.
The matter will likely be postponed because of the COVID-19 situation.
