A 34-year-old man who went to a remote campsite with his 11-year-old daughter was surprised to learn that an entire search operation was launched on Tuesday to find them.
The man had gone camping along the Silver River, inland of Wilderness, with the intention of waiting out the lockdown period. The father had taken the family dog and kitten to join them.
The man’s sister dropped them off at the start of a hiking trail last week Thursday.
A spokesperson for the NSRI Craig Lambinon says the sister got a call from her brother on Tuesday who told her that they were running low on supplies, the call, however, was dropped and she raised the alarm.
He says they immediately called the police and a search commenced on Tuesday night at 7 pm.
Lambinon says four of their crew members volunteered to go on a preliminary reconnaissance of the area but due to dense vegetation, they had to call off the search at 11 pm.
He says by Wednesday morning they had to get permission to hike on private property between the nearest road access point and the area where the camping site was believed to be.
During the search, the campers were found in the process of packing up in order to go home.
Lambinon says they were very surprised and apologetic that a search had been launched for them.
He says the father and daughter, as well as their dog and kitten, have all been reunited with family members.
