Former ANC Buffalo City branch chairperson, Zolani Xego, started serving his eight-year prison sentence for fraud following his dramatic arrest on Friday.
The National Prosecuting Authority said when the Hawks and Visible Police members arrived at his Southernwood home, he first refused them entry and later threw boiling water at the officers.
Spokesperson, Anelisa Ngcakani, said, "it is alleged that the police retreated and he locked himself inside his home but he eventually handed himself over when his lawyer arrived at the scene."
Xego was sentenced in 2015 to 15 years imprisonment for faking his own death in order to claim a R3.6 million life policy. He lost his appeal in the Grahamstown High Court but the court reduced his 15-year sentence to eight years.
Ngckani said the court further granted him R5000 bail after he indicated that he would submit a petition to the Supreme Court of Appeal.
"He never petitioned," she said.
A notice was served on Xego on 4 May 2021 for him to report to the clerk of the East London Magistrates Court to commence serving his sentence.
"He had until Monday, 10 May 2021 at 9 am to hand himself in. He never did and consequently, a warrant for his arrest was issued," Ngcakani said.
