The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has confirmed that the off-duty policeman who shot and killed champion boxer, Leighandre “Baby Lee” Jegels, was a member of the police's Tactical Reaction Unit in East London.
She was allegedly shot dead by her 37-year old boyfriend, who also shot and wounded her mother, following an incident in the city on Friday afternoon.
IPID acting national spokesperson, Sontaga Seisa says immediately after the shootings, the police officer drove off in the direction of Port Elizabeth.
"He was later arrested, and he is currently in hospital due to some injuries he sustained because of a motor vehicle accident", he said.
Seisa said the suspect would appear in court on Monday.
