EL family arrested for illegal fishing

Three family members are due to appear in the East London Magistrate's court on Friday for transgressing environmental laws.

Captain Hazel Mqala says a couple and their adult son were arrested earlier this week after East London visible policing unit members attended to a complaint of people fishing with certain kinds of netting at Bridle Drift Dam without a licence.

On their arrival, police found three suspects,  a 57-year-old man, his 50-year-old wife and their 21-year-old son.

The members seized a White Hyundai truck and the netting.

Upon further investigation they found three freezers packed with fish at the suspects' home in Sheridan Street, Amalinda.

Captain Mqala says the family was arrested in terms of an ordinance which deals with the protection of fish in inland waters.

They were detained at the East London police station ahead of their court appearance.
