EL drunk driving campaign "bears fruit" - SAPS

Port Elizabeth police are searching for nine suspects who pulled off two business robberies in the city over the past 24 hours.

Police spokesperson, warrant officer Alwin Labans, says seven men robbed a Somali shop owner in Walmer Township last night of cellphones, cash and cigarettes.

No one was injured during the heist.

Labans says they're also searching for two armed men who robbed a Tops Liquor Store in Hunters Retreat on Sunday morning.

He says the men threatened staff before grabbing a cash tray from a till and fleeing.

Meanwhile, East London police say 144 people were arrested in a weekend anti-crime blitz.

Spokesperson, captain Steven Marais, says the suspects were nabbed from crimes ranging from robbery, possession of drugs to defeating the ends of justice.

But, Marais says ongoing operations have also helped to reduce the number of drunk driving arrests in Buffalo City.

"We averaged around 25 to 30 suspects for drunk driving over weekends over the past month. This weekend we only had seven arrests for drunk driving pointing to the fact that operations that are continuing for drunken driving and drunken driving campaigns are bearing fruit," said Marais.
