A couple from Mdantsane in East London who were charged in connection with the murder of their five-year-old daughter, have been found guilty in the magistrate's court.
Siphelo Melfin (31) was convicted on Friday after pleading guilty to killing his step-daughter, Kungawo. He also pleaded guilty to a charge of defeating the ends of justice.
His girlfriend and the child's mother, Nosikhumbuzo Mabusela, was convicted on a charge of defeating the ends of justice.
The couple was arrested in June last year after police discovered the decomposed body of the child buried in a shallow grave in a garden close to their home.
Melfin had assaulted the child with a belt on the 8 June, 2016, after which she died.
The court heard that he and Nosikhumbuzo then wrapped the child's body in a blanket and buried it in a shallow grave.
A neighbour, who had become suspicious, alerted police which led the couple's arrest.
The State had argued that Melfin and Mabusela did not show remorse.
They will be sentenced next Wednesday.
