An East London policeman has died after being stabbed while intervening in a fight between two men.
The policeman was identified as 37-year-old Sergeant Siphiwo Mtsewu, of the Cambridge police.
According to a SAPS statement, he and a colleague were busy with community engagements in Cambridge location when they went to investigate a commotion.
"Upon arrival, they found a man stabbing another male adult and tried to intervene by ordering the suspect to drop the knife.
The suspect advanced on the members who fired shots to stop him but he managed to stab Sgt Mtsewu in the upper body".
He succumbed to the stab wound at the scene.
The suspect is currently under police guard at the local hospital and will be charged with murder.
