The Economic Freedom Fighters have denied any involvement in the defacing of a heritage statue in King Williams Town over the weekend.
The Queen Victoria Statue in Maclean Square and the War Memorial in another part of town were defaced over the weekend by vandals who sprayed EFF letters on them.
EFF spokesperson in the Eastern Cape, Yoliswa Yako, says the ANC government had promised to remove all reminders of the country's colonial past.
However, she says nothing's been done and now people are taking the situation into their own hands.
Yako says although EFF members were not involved in defacing of the statue but they do support the call for colonial statues to go.
"As EFF we demand answers on the statues, because it has been a while now and nothing has been done about them. People are tired. None of our members have taken ownership for defacing the statues, it could have been anyone, however we are in support of people taking charge of their own cities" said.
Police Spokesperson for King Williams Town Lieutenant Siphokazi Mawisa says they were not aware of the statues being defaced as nobody has laid a charge with police.
