EFF applauds toppling of PE memorial

The Economic Freedom Fighters have applauded the toppling of Port Elizabeth’s 110-year-old Horse Memorial but say they cannot claim responsibility for the act.

The bronze statue was erected in memory of horses who served and died in the Second Boer War and shows a kneeling soldier holding a bucket of water for his horse. The soldier was ripped off its plinth on Monday.

EFF Eastern Cape co-ordinator Simcelile Rubela says they are not aware of any of their members being involved - but support the attack on the Horse Memorial.

"We have taken a decision to say-all statues that represent the painful past of our people should go down. Those statues don't constitute our history" he said

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality came out strongly in condemning the targeting and damaging of historical statues around the metro.

Municipality spokesperson, Roland Williams, said the attacks were nothing more than brazen hooliganism.

Rubela, however, sees nothing criminal in the targeting of historical sites the EFF deems to be offensive to its people.

"It is not a criminal act, it is a progressive act of rewriting the history and defeating the white supremacist ideals. There is nothing criminal about it. Williams should be joining us" he added
