Education Minister ordered to publish norms and standards for school infrastructure

The Bhisho High Court has made an order by consent compelling Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, to publish norms and standards for school infrastructure.

Thursday's order is seen as a victory for the education sector NGO, Equal Education which was represented in court by the Legal Resource Centre in Grahamstown.

Equal Education's Sam Shapiro, says the court order notes that Motshekga did not comply with an earlier Settlement Agreement.

He says furthermore, she has to publish amended draft regulations for Minimum Uniform Norms and Standards for School Infrastructure for public comment by the 12th of September and these must be promulgated by the 30th of November.

"This is different form the settlement agreement we had in November which we relied on the Minister in good faith and this is an order of court which means the timeline the minister has actually given us will be te new timeline and it will culminate in November by which if she does not comply she will be in contempt of court and that can led to a fine or imprisonment" he said.
