The Legal Resources Centre has instituted a class action lawsuit in the Grahamstown High Court in a bid to compel the Department of Basic Education to permanently appoint teachers to vacant posts in the province.
LRC director, Sarah Septhon, says they're also seeking an order directing the Department to reimburse schools millions of rands for paying teachers who should have been paid by the state.
Septhon says they are representing the School Governing Body of Linkside High School in Port Elizabeth and the SGBs of 31 other affected schools in the Eastern Cape.
The matter will be heard in April next year.
In her founding affidavit, Sephton says the Department of Basic Education's failure to implement post establishment since 2010, has led to many schools being placed in a situation of crisis and financial peril.
