A 21-year-old woman who tried to rescue some children in the Kowie River yesterday has drowned.
Police Spokesperson Captain Mali Govender says six children, between the ages of 10 and 15 were playing at Kiddies beach when they got into difficulty.
The victim, who saw what was happening, tried to rescue them but in their panic, they all clung to her.
Six bystanders who saw what happened went to assist and managed to bring everyone, except the victim, to safety.
Govender says Emergency services responded within minutes and the children were transported to various hospitals. One child is in a critical condition in a hospital in Port Elizabeth.
The Cluster Commander of Port Alfred expressed his sadness and shock and offered his condolences to the family of the victim who passed away.
