Police at Mthatha in the Eastern Cape have opened a murder and arson docket after a 61-year-old woman and her two granddaughters were found burnt to death in their home in the nearby Slovo Park informal settlement in the early hours of Monday morning.
Captain Dineo Koena says the children were aged 5 and 8 and burnt beyond recognition alongside their grandmother.
Their home in Wushe street was destroyed.
Captain Koena told AlgoaFM News that police were investigating three counts of murder and arson as they suspected foul play.
She said she could not provide further specifics for fear of jeopardizing the investigation.
The motive for the incident has not yet been established and there have yet to be any arrests.
The Acting Cluster Commander, Brigadier Mandlakhe Twala, condemns this attack against women and children and promised the community that the perpetrators would be arrested soon.
