EC weekend rains: What to expect

Drought-stricken areas of the Eastern Cape can expect some temporary relief later this weekend.

Garth Sampson at the PE Branch of the SA weather service says according to their current data, Sunday will see a 60% chance of rain over the Western Half of the Eastern Cape, which will include the interior and drought-stricken areas of Adelaide and Bedford.

Showers of greater than 20mm are expected over the southern coastal areas and adjacent interior which will include the catchment areas in the Langkloof.

Sampson says some much-needed thunderstorms are expected over the northern parts of the province, which will include Graaff-Reinet, however, rain over the Eastern parts of the province, especially in Port Alfred, will be less significant.

Strong winds are also expected over these northern parts with snow expected over the Drakensberg.

What to expect?

-20mm in areas west of St Francis (localised flooding expected)

-10mm in Graaff-Reinet and Adelaide

-15mm between PE and Port Alfred

-50mm (heavy falls) along the coast and adjacent interior between Plettenberg Bay and Joubertina

The rain is expected to clear by Monday.
