Port Elizabeth police have opened an inquest docket after the body of a man was found with multiple dog bites in Malabar.
Spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says police were alerted early on Friday morning about a body lying in Armstrong Street.
She says the 48-year-old Melvin Stuurman had multiple bite wounds to his face.
Janse van Rensburg says the circumstances around the attack and his subsequent death is unclear.
She says whilst the police were processing the crime scene, they followed up on information about a woman who was busy washing her dogs in Malabar, not far from the scene.
Police roped in the help of the Animal Anti Cruelty league who accompanied them to the premises.
Police found four dogs at the house and removed them pending further investigation.
According to police two dogs were pittbulls and the other two were a mixed breed.
A post mortem will now be done on Stuurman's body to determine the exact cause of death.
