EC weekend rain misses the mark but longer term predictions more "promising"

The Port Elizabeth Weather Office said that the rainfall over the region over the past few days had done little to relieve the pressure on the Nelson Mandela Bay supply dams.

Weather Office spokesperson, Garth Sampson, said that between 0.2 and 14.2 mm was measured at several stations across the Eastern Cape and into the Garden Route.

He said the highest measurement of 14.2 mm was recorded at Cape St Francis and 11mm at George.

Port Elizabeth Airport received 11.8mm.

Sampson said however that over the longer term, things are looking slightly better.

"The rest of the week does not look too promising but towards the weekend and more towards next Monday, a nice system appears to be developing that could give some significant falls.  However, it is a bit early to say at this stage," Sampson said.

He said over the "very long term", during mid-Winter towards the end of Winter, some models are predicting "normal" to "above normal" rainfall.

Sampson said this is "very heartening at this stage" with the dam levels being so low.
