The death toll from accidents on Eastern Cape roads this weekend has risen to at least nine after five people were killed in a horror crash on Sunday afternoon.
Earlier on Sunday, the Eastern Cape Transport Department reported that four people were killed in two separate accidents on the N2 outside Gqeberha and the T12 road in Maluti at Khoapa location.
In the latest accident, Department spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said five males from North West Province were killed when a VW Polo, collided with a truck with one occupant on the road between Dyoki (Ugie) and Khowa (Elliot).
He said all the driver of the truck escaped unhurt.
“The circumstances surrounding the cause of the crash are still unknown at this stage.
“A case of culpable homicide has been opened at Ugie Saps for further investigation,” he added.
