The Eastern Cape Transport Department says four people have lost their lives in two separate accidents in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said two people were killed when the driver lost control of his vehicle on the N2 between Gqeberha and Humansdorp.
He said the accident happened at around 06H40 when a vehicle with three occupants overturned.
Binqose said two passengers died on the scene, while the driver sustained critical injuries and was taken to Cuyler Hospital for further medical examination.
He said in another crash, at about 4 AM on Sunday, a bakkie with seven occupants lost control and overturned on the T12 road in Maluti at Khoapa location.
Two passengers, a male and a female died on the scene while five people who were injured, including the driver, were taken to Taylor Bequest Hospital.
“It is alleged that driving under the influence of alcohol was the contributing factor,” he said.
Binqose said police are investigating cases of culpable homicide that have been opened with the police.
