Eastern Cape Transport MEC, Thandiswa Marawu, says the province has a special plan in place to prevent unroadworthy vehicles from entering the province.
Marawu was speaking in Mount Ayliff on Wednesday at the launch of the province's Arrive Alive campaign.
MEC Marawu said while the campaign launch took place on one of the most hazardous roads in the province, several road safety programmes are in place to safeguard that stretch of the N-2.
These include "Operation Asi-hleki", a provincial campaign in support of the National Rolling Enforcement Plan and "Operation Kwanele", a campaign targeting the more than 900 kilometre stretch of the N-2 from the Western Cape to the borders of KwaZulu-Natal.
MEC Marawu said her Department's Special Plan for this season, will mainly focus on the cross-border operations in order to prevent unroadworthy vehicles and unfit drivers from entering the province.
Her spokesperson, Ncedo Kumbaca.
"When you look at the accidents that took place in previous years you will find that the vehicles involved come from the Western Cape, KZN or even Gauteng, and they get involved in accidents. It seems they evade the traffic authorities in their own provinces and we have agreed that we have to strengthen our relationships with those authorities, especially in the border areas" he said
Meanwhile, MEC Marawu will this week introduce the new board members for the state-sponsored Mayibuye Transport Corporation.
This will take place in King Williams Town on Thursday when she will also announce the acting Chief Executive Officer for the bus company.
The Department of Transport says the introduction of the new board follows the suspension of the entire Mayibuye Transport Corporation board and former CEO, Luthando Mbinda in September.
They were sidelined due to under-performance, as the transport entity regressed from an unqualified audit opinion to a disclaimer in the 2012-2013 financial year.
