The Eastern Cape Department of Transport says it has lost one of its longest-serving traffic officers in an accident on the R63 between Graaf-Reinet and Jansenville.
It says Frans Schoeman, who was based at the Straundale Traffic Station in Port Elizabeth, was travelling back from a COVID-19 deployment at the Aberdeen station on Friday when his vehicle hit a Kudu.
It veered off the road and overturned.
Officer Schoeman was alone in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
Transport MEC, Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe has extended her condolences to his family and colleagues who had been working with him at the Border COVID-19 station.
She has described the loss as a massive blow to the department and traffic law enforcement in the province.
