A manager at the Port St John's traffic department appeared in court on Monday for allegedly plotting to kill a senior municipal official.
The Hawks in the Eastern Cape said that 44-year-old Bonginkosi Nkwahla was arrested in a sting operation on Friday.
He allegedly paid R2000 to an undercover Hawks officer after the Serious Organised Crime Unit received a tip-off from an informer about the murder plot towards the end of July.
Hawks Eastern Cape spokesperson, Captain Anelisa Ngcakani, said Nkwahla allegedly undertook to pay the undercover police officer a further R58 000 once the hit murder had been carried out.
The intended victim was not identified.
Nkwahla was charged with conspiracy to commit murder and his case was postponed to 14 August.
He remains in custody.
