EC traffic authorities report two fatalities on Easter Friday

Eastern Cape Provincial Traffic Authorities have reported two fatalities in a busy 24-hour period that saw traffic volumes increase exponentially on the province's roads.

Provincial Traffic spokesperson, Charles Bramwell, said two people were killed and two injured when a Land Rover overturned on a road between Burgersdorp and Molteno on Friday morning.

However, he said despite the increase in traffic volumes overnight, motorists in general were adhering to the rules of the road.

"In general, motorists have adhered to the call to be responsible drivers. We hope this trend will continue over this weekend," Bramwell said.

He said that traffic volumes overnight Thursday were "quite hectic", but he said "because of our visibility and the way we deployed our traffic officers we had few incidents".

Bramwell said they also conducted a roadblock early on Friday morning on the R61 from Cradock towards Queenstown.

"We prosecuted about 97 people there for various offences.  One worrying factor of this roadblock was that among those prosecuted, were 18 people who were fined for not having drivers licenses." Bramwell said.
