The Eastern Cape Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga, has tested positive for COVID-19.
She is currently self-isolating at home in high spirits and in good health after receiving her diagnosis at the weekend.
National police spokesperson, Brigadier Vish Naidoo, says Lt General Ntshinga voluntarily underwent a test despite being asymptomatic.
“At the time of testing, she had not experienced any illness but chose to undergo the test as a precaution to ensure the safety, good health and wellbeing of herself and those around her,” said Brigadier Naidoo.
“Members of the public at large will appreciate that the Provincial Commissioner has been at the forefront of monitoring the implementation of enforcing the country’s lockdown regulations around the province, since the start of the lockdown,” he added.
Following the news of her diagnosis, the Provincial Commissioner made her results known to the SAPS management team, personnel as well as close contacts.
Brigadier Naidoo said the protocols and directives in place to contain and manage COVID-19 within the organization were immediately implemented. These included the decontamination of the Provincial Office at Zwelitsha on Tuesday 12 May and that close contacts are tested and quarantined if tested positive.
In the meantime, contingency plans have been put in place to ensure that the services rendered from the Eastern Cape Provincial Office are not been disrupted.
