EC to lose out on significant rain predicted with looming cold front

The Eastern Cape will not get much of the rain that's expected over the Western Cape when a cold front reaches the Mother City on Tuesday evening.

Weather Office spokesperson, Garth Sampson, said however that the Eastern Cape would be buffetted by strong winds later this week, with gusts up to 100 kilometres an hour possible in places.

"A significant cold front is currently expected to reach Cape Town on Tuesday evening, spreading through the Eastern Cape by the early hours of Thursday morning.  Ahead of this cold front, warm Berg wind conditions can on Tuesday (6 June) with hot conditions along the south coast," Sampson said.

"This system is expected to bring very strong interior winds on Wednesday possibly reaching gale force in places in the western and northern interior," he added.

"By the early hours of Thursday morning we might see some light snow on the Sneeuberg (Graaff-Reinet) through to the southern Drakensberg (Barkley East/Elliot area).

Gale force Westerly winds can be expected along the south coast on Thursday with gusts of up to 100km/h possible in places."

Sampson said that "while some showers are expected along the south coast, most of the rain will impact on the Western Cape and not much can be expected over the Eastern Cape."

"This system is therefore significant due to the strong winds that many areas will experience and a sudden drop in temperatures on Thursday and Friday," he said.
