Five learners from the Gumzana Senior Secondary School near Mbizana in the Eastern Cape were killed in a collision Monday morning between a bakkie and a bus.
Police spokesperson, Captain Mlumgisi Matidane, said that the learners were in the bakkie on their way to school this morning when the accident occurred at around 7.30am.
He said the bakkie had been turning onto a gravel road towards the school when it was hit by the bus.
Sixteen other learners were injured, three of them seriously said Matidane.
"They have all been taken to the St Josephs Hospital in Mbizana," he said.
Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
