EC teachers in court for allegedly raping schoolboys

The National Prosecuting Authority said it would oppose the bail application of three male staff members of a school in Ngcobo in the Eastern Cape who are facing charges of rape and sexual assault.

Two teachers and an admin clerk were arrested on Sunday for allegedly luring three of their teenage male learners to their homes, plying them with alcohol before raping them. It is alleged that the men had promised to help the boys with their school work.

NPA regional spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali, said the accused, who are aged between 30 and 49, made a brief appearance in the Ngcobo Magistrate's court on Tuesday.

"Their case has been postponed to 27 September for a possible bail application," he said.

Tyali said this was a "classic case" where someone had misused their position.

"They were in a position of trust as teachers.  They were supposed to protect them because a teacher is a parent to the child when the child is at school," he said.
