EC taxi operator gunned down in Peddie

A long-time member of the Border Alliance Taxi Association has been gunned down outside the Ayliff Primary School at Peddie on Wednesday moments after dropping children off at school as per his scholar transport contract.

High calibre weapons were used in what appears to have been a well-planned hit, with R5 and 9mm cartridges found at the scene of the murder on the R345 in Durban location, Peddie.

Algoa FM News has also learned that previous attempts had been made on the victim's life.

He was in his sixties and police are withholding his name at this stage.

Police Captain Mali Govender said the victim was on his way home after dropping the kids off at school when he was gunned down, just after eight o'clock Wednesday morning.

"A male in his sixties was fatally wounded.  We have got crime scene investigators on scene. We are also appealing to any person who can give us information on this particular incident or any other incidents of shootings in the area to please contact the crime stop number or the local police station," said Govender.

Early in June two people were also gunned down in suspected taxi-related violence close to a Peddie taxi rank.

The men, aged 60 and 52, were killed just minutes apart on 5 June while two other people were wounded.
