Family of slain Uitenhage child sues police for millions

The family of a child who was shot and killed during a violent protest in Kamesh, Uitenhage, four years ago is suing the minister of Police for millions of rands.

The ten-year-old victim, Maricha Speelman was a grade 6 learner at the St Josephs Primary school when she was shot in the head, allegedly by police.

Speelman was returning from the shops with her sister when she got caught in the crossfire during a service delivery protest.

Police at the time insisted that only rubber bullets were used during the protest but the family believe otherwise and is seeking answers.

Algoa FM News has learnt that a ballistic expert will be testifying during the trial.

The matter is set to be heard in the Port Elizabeth High Court from Wednesday.

Speelmans parents are suing the police for past and future medical expenses, loss of income, funeral expenses and general damages for the pain and trauma caused - to the amount of 5 million rands.
